Liturgical
Quilts
In
the sanctuary of the First Congregational Church hang six quilts,
transforming the barren walls into colorful focal points.
Designed to resemble stained-glass windows, the wall hangings afford a
flexible and less expensive alternative to the traditional leaded
glass. More than 30 individuals worked on these quilts whose structure
consists of two side panels, pieced by volunteers, and a center panel
with a specific theme. Designed and quilted by Joanne Wietgrefe, each
pair mirrors the symmetry of the space, the angled tops echoing the
wooden rafters of the church. The quilts are seven feet wide and ten
feet long. They are removed from the sanctuary during Lent.
